Topic: CHOOSING WHAT IS NEEDFUL.
Scripture: Luke 10:41-42 (NKJV) – “And Jesus answered and said to her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many things. But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.'”
In this passage, we find two sisters, Martha and Mary, each responding to Jesus in different ways. Martha is busy with preparations, anxious to serve and ensure everything is in order. Mary, on the other hand, sits at Jesus’ feet, listening to His teaching. When Martha, overwhelmed by her many tasks, asks Jesus to tell Mary to help her, Jesus lovingly corrects her. He tells Martha that, while she is worried and troubled about many things, Mary has chosen the “good part”—to be in His presence, listening to His word.
This scene speaks powerfully to the distractions and worries that often consume our lives. Like Martha, we are easily pulled into the busyness of life—our work, responsibilities, and even good deeds. Yet, Jesus reminds us that in the midst of all these tasks, the most important thing is to sit at His feet and spend time in His presence. Mary chose what was needful, recognizing that being with Jesus and hearing His words was more important than any task.
Today, Jesus is gently calling us to pause in our busyness and choose what is needful—to spend time with Him, to listen to His voice, and to rest in His presence. Like Martha, we often worry and are distracted by many things, but only one thing is truly necessary: to be near Jesus. Make the choice, like Mary, to sit at His feet today, and let His peace replace your anxieties.
Prayer:
Lord, help us to choose what is needful. In the midst of life’s demands, remind us to pause and spend time in Your presence. Teach us to rest at Your feet, to listen to Your voice, and to find peace in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
