Topic: THE GIFT OF LONG SUFFERING ….
Scripture Reading: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”— Galatians 5:25 (NIV)
Reflection: One of the often-overlooked attributes of a Christian is long suffering, the ability to endure hardship with patience and grace.
Psalm 86:15 reminds us, “But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion and gracious, long suffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.” Just as God exemplifies long suffering, we are called to embody this attribute in our own lives. Consider the story of a pastor in the USA who faced a life-altering automobile accident. He endured severe fractures and spent nearly two years in the hospital.
Rather than succumbing to despair, he emerged as a champion for those suffering from similar ailments, traveling to share hope and encouragement. His experience of long suffering became a source of strength and inspiration for others. In the Bible, we see many examples of long suffering. Joseph endured betrayal and imprisonment yet chose to help others during his trials.
His patience and love in the face of adversity ultimately led to his rise and the salvation of his family. Long suffering is deeply intertwined with mercy, as seen in Ephesians 4:2: “With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love.” We can find solace in the stories of biblical figures such as Job, Moses, Abraham, Ruth, and, of course, Jesus Christ.
Their unwavering faith amidst struggles encourages us to remain steadfast in our own trials. They continued to praise God, knowing that their suffering was not in vain and that joy would eventually come. As we navigate our own challenges, let us hold fast to love and patience. Remember that help is on the way; as Scripture assures us, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5).
Prayer: Lord, I am grateful for Your unwavering love and mercy towards me and my household. Help me to embody long suffering in my life, reflecting Your compassion to those around me. May I remain patient and steadfast in challenging situations, trusting that joy will come in Your perfect timing. In Jesus’ mighty name, I pray. Amen.
Contemplation: • In what areas of your life do you need to practice long suffering? • How can you use your experiences of hardship to encourage and uplift others?
Action Step: Today, reach out to someone who may be experiencing a difficult time. Offer them words of encouragement, share your own experiences, and remind them of God’s faithfulness. Let your journey of long suffering be a source of hope for others.
